HAPPY TAILS RESCUE: FILLY REUNITED WITH FAMILY
Late one June day a call came into Wild Horse Connection through the Wild Horse Hotline that a young horse was on the wrong side of the fence from its family on Highway 50. WHC immediately sent the call to LRTC’s rescue team.
Four responders were just a few miles away and one more a bit further out. The first to arrive found the few-month-old filly laying down flat on the outside of the fence, with the dam and band stallion standing on the inside. Unsure whether she was sleeping or injured, she stayed quiet and waited for the others to show up.
Once the others arrived, they decided the best course of action was to unwind the wires on a section of fence that had a repair, as quietly as possible, and they set to work. All the while, the filly continued to lay there.
Once the fence was open, the team gently approached the filly. She woke with a startle, jumped to her feet with a big stretch and started looking for a way through the fence. Forming a wall of people they guided her to the opening and she bolted back to the correct side with her family.
With a big sigh of relief, the team secured the wires again. They searched for an opening and could only guess that while reaching through the wires she managed to slowly get her legs through and found herself outside the fence. As they say, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence!
