Happy Tails Rescue
Meet Buddy!
When an ATV rider finds a new baby standing over his deceased mom, what else is there to do? Wild Horse Connection received this call and went to work determining jurisdiction, making notifications, and alerting the rescue team.
The rescue team happens to have a couple of trained responders who live in the general area and made the call. Fortunately, one of the responders was available on this sunny Sunday. Not yet knowing the details of what he would encounter, he hooked up his horse trailer and headed out only to find this tiny dark foal.
The man who found him, Bud, stayed available to lead the way. Thanks to his efforts, this tiny life was saved and this sweet colt was named Buddy after the man who found him. And instead of the trailer, the hungry colt got to ride in the cab of the truck, trying to suckle anything he could find on the way to Comstock Equine Hospital!
Buddy’s coat, though black at first glance, is filled with white hairs and he will likely turn roan or gray.
Buddy spent some extra days at the hospital until he cleared an intestinal bacterial infection (it seems many of the babies carry this bacteria and clear it on their own with mom’s antibodies in the wild. Once brought in with no mom, it is very contagious and they have to be clear before being introduced to the other foals in the nursery.) He now romps with Creedence and Jaya at the foal nursery.
If you’d like to help with the foals, reach out to Wild Horse Connection! They can always use volunteers, as well as donations for milk replacer and other needs for the foals.
